MEET THE TEAM
Molly Mattoon
Molly has had a passion for all aspects of health, wellness, and fitness the duration of her adult life. Her group fitness career began in 1997 where she taught group fitness and worked as a student athletic trainer while earning her Bachelors of Science in Community Health at the State University of New York at Potsdam. Upon moving to Maryland in 2001, she began her career teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology and Biology at the high school level. During this time, she continued teaching group fitness in various athletic clubs around the Baltimore area. Her career transitioned from teaching high school to working in the senior healthcare setting, specifically assisted living and nursing homes in Maryland, Delaware, and the Northern Virginia area. All the while, teaching fitness and continuing her education in the health and wellness area has remained her true passion. During the pandemic, Molly filled a major void in many people’s lives and safely hosted “Backyard Bootcamps” in her own backyard. It was also during this time her love of scientific research and her fascination with the
mechanisms of the human body became more important than ever as her young son took ill with what was considered to be a rare condition. This is where her journey with functional medicine and root cause healing began. After much research, and an arduous journey finding the right medical team for her son, she witnessed first hand just how important discovering root cause truly is. Armed with the knowledge and evidence of functional medicine, she felt compelled to be able to help as many people as possible who are struggling in their own health journey. In February 2023, Molly graduated as a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, the only program designed and delivered in collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine and fully approved by the NBHWC. The evolution of Inside-Out A Functional Wellness Studio, LLC. is a convergence of many years of Molly’s passion for health and wellness, fitness, and root cause healing. No aspect of client health and safety was left unturned when designing the studio space.
Currently, Molly holds her Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach certificate, and Group Fitness
Instructor Certificate through the American Council on Exercise. She holds additional certifications and continuing education in the following areas: Pumped Up Strength™, BOSU® HIIT Extreme, Barre Above™, TRX®, TRX® RIP® Training, Mossa Group Blast®, TRIGGER POINT® Foam Rolling principles, R.I.P.P.E.D®, and WaterCoach by WaterRower.

Katie Brennan
Katie grew up playing a variety of sports—lacrosse, tennis, swimming, and karate—but her true love for exercise began during the pandemic. During this time, she started incorporating strength training and HIIT workouts into her daily routine, which inspired her to change her major so she could study the science behind exercise. Katie interned with the University of Maryland Athletics and worked as a research assistant in the Department of Exercise Physiology. She graduated in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and recently earned her Personal Training Certificate through the American College of Sports Medicine.
Katie is passionate about functional wellness, focusing on strength, mobility, balance, and practical movements that enhance daily activities. She is dedicated to fostering an inclusive exercise environment and is excited to design classes that are both challenging and accessible to individuals at every stage of their fitness journey.

Laurel Brennen
In childhood, Laurel loved participating in competitive dance, majorettes, and gymnastics but transitioned to team sports as a lacrosse attacker in high school and college. During a year abroad in Paris, she started practicing, and advanced quickly, in Tae Kwon Do when she happened upon the French Olympic coach, who was teaching a class at the local community center. After graduate school in Occupational Therapy, she took a job running the childcare at a family-run gym to support her new job as a stay-at-home mom (and to get a free gym membership!). It was there that she began her personal trainer/fitness instructor side hustle in 2000. Her group fitness certification came through Fitness Scotland in 2004 when living in the UK, where she loved blending Tae Kwon Do and dance into traditional aerobics classes. Throughout this time frame, she was sampling yoga classes. She found many teachers who were pushing students in a way that often caused harm but a few who were excellent at adapting the class to suit the students. When she went through her own health crisis and received a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in 2006, she returned to yoga to cope with the stress and fear and was introduced to functional or root cause medicine. Her personal health journey inspired yoga and additional fitness training and continuing education in functional medicine and health coaching. She is now a RYT 200 hr yoga instructor and owner of RootCauseology, a functional medicine practice, where she helps women optimize brain health and reduce dementia risk.

When she is not teaching you can find her at her “daytime job” as a Chiropractic Assistant or behind her camera, taking photos for families.
